Let's make a hedgehog!

A disability-led workshop for our community

A Community Workshop with Lucy

What better way to end a busy week than with a bit of mindfulness—turning old books into charming hedgehogs?

It all started at Kenneth House, part of Freeways care and supported living, where our team was chatting with residents about local volunteering opportunities. That’s when we spotted a delightful little hedgehog perched on the mantelpiece. Lucy, one of the residents,  proudly claimed it as her creation - a hobby she loves. She had even crafted one for every member of staff! Seeing an opportunity for collaboration, My Community Bristol invited Lucy to lead a workshop, and she was over the moon at the idea.

Next came the hunt for the perfect venue. Gloucester Road, famous for its charity shops, had an excellent option—the spacious community hub at the Marie Curie shop. A quick visit later, and Stephanie, the Hub Space Manager, enthusiastically offered Lucy a space, complete with teas and coffees, in exchange for a small donation per creator.

On the big day, Stephanie had made the space warm and inviting, setting up tables and even providing a box of books for crafting. Although Lucy had never run a workshop before, she was a natural!

Attendees found the activity incredibly calming.  There was lots of laughter, chatter, and new friendships forming. Even passing shoppers couldn’t resist wandering over to see what all the fun was about!

By the end of the session, each participant left with a handmade hedgehog and the excitement of sharing their newfound skills with family and friends.

A huge well done to Lucy for an outstanding workshop and heartfelt thanks to Marie Curie and its staff for creating such a welcoming community space. Here’s to more creative collaborations ahead!
